John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HebrewPod101.com. I'm John.

John: This is Must-Know Hebrew Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 6. In this lesson, you'll learn common slang question expressions.
John: These are very popular expressions, and you can hear people in Israel using them often. Use them when you want to get more information or an opinion about something.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Katja: מה הקטע של...? (ma haketa she...?)
Katja: מה הסיפור שלו? (ma ha'sipur shelo?)
Katja: מה נפל עליו? (ma nafal alav?)
Katja: מה נהיה? (ma nihiya?)
John: Katja, what's our first expression?
Katja: מה הקטע של...? (ma haketa she...?)
John: literally meaning "what's the thing of...?." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "what's the thing with...?".
Katja: [SLOW] מה הקטע של...? [NORMAL] מה הקטע של...?
John: Listeners, please repeat.

John: Use this slang expression when you want to get more information or an explanation, or hear someone else's opinion regarding a certain matter which is not entirely clear to you.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] מה הקטע של לגדל זקן? כולם עושים את זה עכשיו. [SLOW] מה הקטע של לגדל זקן? כולם עושים את זה עכשיו.
John: "What's the thing with growing a beard? Everyone is doing it now."
Katja: [NORMAL] מה הקטע של לגדל זקן? כולם עושים את זה עכשיו.
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Katja: מה הסיפור שלו? (ma ha'sipur shelo?)
John: literally meaning "what's his story?". But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "what's with him?".
