POST CONVERSATION BANTER |
Sherah: Israelis are expert travelers. |
Amir: Well, we travel a lot because we live in such a small country. You have to get out and stretch your legs every once in a while. |
Sherah: There are three times in the year when many people in Israel like to leave the country. |
Amir: Right, the first is in the spring during Passover. |
Sherah: The second is during summer holidays, and the third is during the high holidays in the Fall. |
Amir: Many young people also like to take a big trip after their term of service in the Army. |
Sherah: The most popular travel destinations for young people include India, Thailand and South America. |
Amir: Young people aren't the only ones who love to travel, though. |
Sherah: Right, families also need to get out of the country! |

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES |
Sherah: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is.. |
Amir: ืืืืืื ืืงืื |
Sherah: meaning "to reserve a place". |
Sherah: This phrase is made of two words. The first word is the verb ืืืืืื meaning โto orderโ. |
Amir: The second word is ืืงืื which means โplaceโ. |
Sherah: This phrase can be used when reserving a place for dinner. |
Amir: If you call a restaurant to make a reservation, you would say, ืื ื ืจืืฆื ืืืืืื ืืงืื. |
Sherah: If youโre a woman, you would say ืื ื ืจืืฆื ืืืืืื ืืงืื. |
Amir: You can use this phrase to reserve a room in a hotel like in the dialogue, or you can use it to reserve a seat at a concert. |
Sherah: Can you give us an example using this phrase? |
Amir: Sure. For example, you can say.. ืืืื ืืืืื ื ืืงืื ืืงืื ืฆืจื ืฉื ืืืื ืืื. |
Sherah: ...which means "Lilach is reserving a place at Gidi Govโs concert." |
Sherah: Okay, now onto the grammar. |
Lesson focus
|
Sherah: In this lesson, youโll learn how to ask when check-out is. |
Amir: And the focus of this lesson is using regular paโal verbs. |
Sherah: In the dialogue, the verb ืืขืืื was used in two different ways. |
Amir: ืืขืืื means โto leaveโ. |
Sherah: The first time we see it, the front desk attendant says ืืืชื ืขืืื ืืืื ืจืืฉืื, ื ืืื |
Amir: Here ืืขืืื is conjugated in the present tense and it agrees with ืืชื in the masculine singular. |
Sherah: Letโs go through all four conjugations of ืืขืืื in the present tense. |
Amir: Sure, first is the masculine singular, like in the dialogue: ืขืืื |
Sherah: Second is the feminine singular |
Amir: which is pronounced ืขืืืืช |
Sherah: then thereโs the masculine plural |
Amir: which is ืขืืืืื |
Sherah: And last is the feminine plural: |
Amir: which is ืขืืืืืช |
Sherah: The second way we see this verb used in the dialogue is in the masculine plural form, ืขืืืืื. |
Amir: We hear this when Doron says ืืชื ืขืืืืื ืืืื ืจืืฉืื. |
Sherah: Right, he says, โWhen does one leave on Sunday?โ |
Amir: By this he means, โwhen is check-out?โ. |
Sherah: The way he phrases it is typical in Hebrew. He says ืืชื ืขืืืืื or literally โwhen does one leaveโ. |
Amir: Using a verb in the masculine plural without a subject is the way you make a general statement in Hebrew. |
Sherah: Thatโs why Doron says ืืชื or โwhenโ and then ืขืืืืื meaning โleaveโ. Itโs implied that heโs talking about people in general. So itโs like โWhen do people leave?โ. |
Amir: At the end, he adds ืืืื ืจืืฉืื |
Sherah: โWhen do people leave on Sunday?โ |
Amir: Another example of this would be ืขืืืืื ืืืื ืจืืฉืื ืืืฉืจืื |
Sherah: "People work on Sundays in Israel." |
Amir: Or ืืืืจืื ืืจืื ืืช ืืืจืื ืื |
Sherah: Meaning โPeople speak German in Germany.โ And can you give us another example of a normal sentence with ืืขืืื |
Amir: Sure, how about ืืื ื ืขืืืืช ืืช ืืืืช |
Sherah: Which means โDina is leaving the house.โ |
Outro
|
Sherah: Okay, thatโs all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and weโll see you next time! Bye! |
Amir: ืชืืื |
