John: Slang That Uses Metaphors
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HebrewPod101.com. I'm John.

John: This is Must-Know Hebrew Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 2. In this lesson, you'll learn slang that uses metaphors.
John: By using these metaphor expressions, you'll create a rhetorical effect which will provide clarity or identify hidden similarities to an idea you wish to express.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Katja: לדפוק את הראש בקיר (lidfok et ha'rosh ba'kir)
Katja: לא ללקק דבש (lo lelakek dvash)
Katja: להיות עם פרצוף תשעה באב (lihiyot im partsuf tish-ah be'av)
Katja: לעשות כיפה אדומה (la'asot kipa aduma)
John: Katja, what's our first expression?
Katja: לדפוק את הראש בקיר (lidfok et ha'rosh ba'kir)
John: literally meaning "to bang the head on the wall." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be very frustrated."

John: Use this slang expression when you are so frustrated, to the extent of wanting to bang your head against the wall.

John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Katja: לא ללקק דבש (lo lelakek dvash)
John: literally meaning "to not be licking honey." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to not have it easy."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to say about someone (or about yourself) that they do not have it easy or are going through some difficult times. It's a metaphor.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.

John: "They had to close the business and are going through an uneasy time."

Katja: להיות עם פרצוף תשעה באב (lihiyot im partsuf tish-ah be'av)
John: literally meaning "to be with...

John: ...face." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to look sad."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to describe how someone looks sad.
Katja: Tish-ah be'av
John: is regarded as the saddest day in the Jewish calendar, in which a number of disasters occurred, and this slang expression is a metaphor.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] מה אמרת לו? למה הוא עם פרצוף תשעה באב? [SLOW] מה אמרת לו? למה הוא עם פרצוף תשעה באב?
John: "What did you tell him? Why does he look so sad?"

John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Katja: לעשות כיפה אדומה (la'asot kipa aduma)
John: literally meaning "to do Little Red Riding Hood." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to ambush."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to describe a situation where someone is inviting someone else to a certain place in order to hurt them, or the passive form of the same idea: that someone was tricked by someone else, was invited to a place, and there got hurt by the person who invited them. This slang expression is popular among criminals, so some people may not be familiar with it.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] אני לא סומך עליהם, יש לי הרגשה שהם רוצים לעשות לי כיפה אדומה. [SLOW] אני לא סומך עליהם, יש לי הרגשה שהם רוצים לעשות לי כיפה אדומה.
John: "I don't trust them, I have a feeling they want to trick me."
