INTRODUCTION
John: Slang Expressions That Are Popular Among Young People
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HebrewPod101.com. I'm John.
Katja: And I'm Katja!
John: This is Must-Know Hebrew Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 17. In this lesson, you'll learn slang expressions that are popular among young people.
John: These popular expressions are very likely to be heard from young people, but not necessarily.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Katja: אחי (akhi)
Katja: אשכרה (ashkara)
Katja: תכלס (takhles)
Katja: יש מצב (yesh matsav)
John: Katja, what's our first expression?
Katja: אחי (akhi)
John: literally meaning "my brother." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "bro."
Katja: [SLOW] אחי [NORMAL] אחי
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: אחי
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to call a close friend without saying his name, or when you want to call someone whose name you do not know in a friendly way. The female version of this is akhoti, which is something like "sis" (sister).
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] אחי, אתה בא לים? [SLOW] אחי, אתה בא לים?
John: "Bro, are you coming to the beach?"
Katja: [NORMAL] אחי, אתה בא לים?
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Katja: אשכרה (ashkara)
John: It is a Persian word that means "visible" or "well known." In Hebrew, it is equivalent to "Really?!" in English. But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "clearly, without doubt, really."
Katja: [SLOW] אשכרה [NORMAL] אשכרה
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: אשכרה
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to confirm something unbelievable that you've just heard, or when you want to say that something really, seriously, or honestly is happening.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] זה מה שהוא אמר לך?! אשכרה?? [SLOW] זה מה שהוא אמר לך?! אשכרה??
John: "This is what he said to you?! Really??"
Katja: [NORMAL] זה מה שהוא אמר לך?! אשכרה??
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Katja: תכלס (takhles)
John: This word's origin is in the pronunciation of the word
Lenny: תכלית (takhlit)
John: which means "purpose" in Yiddish. But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "the bottom line is... or right."
Katja: [SLOW] תכלס [NORMAL] תכלס
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: תכלס
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to cut out the talking and get straight to the point, or you want someone else to do so, or when you want to agree with something someone else was saying — in this case, it functions as "right" in English.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] המיקום נוח ,העבודה נשמעת מעניינת אבל תכלס השכר שהם מציעים נמוך מידי. [SLOW] המיקום נוח ,העבודה נשמעת מעניינת אבל תכלס השכר שהם מציעים נמוך מידי.
John: "The location is comfortable, the job sounds interesting, but the bottom line is the wages they offer are too low."
Katja: [NORMAL] המיקום נוח ,העבודה נשמעת מעניינת אבל תכלס השכר שהם מציעים נמוך מידי.
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Katja: יש מצב (yesh matsav)
John: literally meaning "there is a situation." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "maybe."
Katja: [SLOW] יש מצב [NORMAL] יש מצב
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: יש מצב
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you don't want to promise or commit, but just leave the option open, or when it is coming at the beginning of a question sentence, it means "Would.... ?"
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] לכו אתם. יש מצב שאצטרף אליכם מאוחר יותר. [SLOW] לכו אתם. יש מצב שאצטרף אליכם מאוחר יותר.
John: "You go. I might join you later."
Katja: [NORMAL] לכו אתם. יש מצב שאצטרף אליכם מאוחר יותר.
QUIZ
John: Okay listeners, are you ready to be quizzed on the expressions you just learned? I will describe four situations, and you will choose the right expression to use in your reply. Are you ready?
John: If your friend is telling you something unbelievable that you didn't know, like: "Justin Bieber lives in your building.", you would then answer...
[pause - 5 sec.]
Katja: אשכרה
John: "clearly, without doubt, really"
John: If you want to ask your friend’s friend to pass you the salt, but you’re not sure what his name is, you can just call him...
[pause - 5 sec.]
Katja: אחי
John: "bro"
John: If someone invites you to some event that they’re having, but you are not quite sure if you’re able to make it or not, you can just say...

Katja: יש מצב
John: "maybe"
John: When you hear someone say something short and summarizing, such as: "On rainy days, it is better to take a taxi.", you can reply...
