Shalom, ani Yana! Welcome to Hebrewpod101.com’s Alef-Beit be-kalei kalut.
The fastest, easiest, and most fun way to learn the Hebrew alphabet: the alef-beit!
In the last lesson we learned the sixth Hebrew letter 'vav' and three new niqqud.
Do you remember how to write David?
and uncle? What about electric water heater?....
In this lesson we will learn two new Hebrew letters.
So let’s move on with the seventh letter-ז- 'Zayin'. The sound is 'z'.
Let's write it in hand writing first-
Does it look familiar?
You might be reminded of the third letter 'Gimel' in hand writing.
Yes, you are right, they are the mirror images of each other. But don't get confused between them!
ג- faces this way.
ז- faces this way.
Ok, how about the print version?
Fortunately, this one will be hard to confuse with the print version of 'Gimel'-
ז
Even though they are pretty different in print, make sure you don’t write ז and ו in too similar a way.
Let’s see the difference
‘Vav' ו
'Zayin' ז
זבוּב
'zvuv'- is a fly in Hebrew.
ז
and in print-
ז
You can easily remember this word since the fly makes this sound "zzzzvvv"..
Let's move on. If you write (Zayin / 'ז) with a comma on the left side, it will sounds like 'zh' (as in the word "Collage").
'ז
First you write 'zayin' and then add the comma on the upper left side.
in print-
'ז
Usually the letter 'ז is used for foreign words like ז'קט- 'jaket'- a Jacket.
ז'וּרנל- 'jurnal'- a Journal, and so forth.
Now we move on to the eighth letter- ח-'Heit'.
This has the sound of 'h'. And it is written like this.
ח
for the hand writing, keep the corners round.
and in print-
ח
Almost the same, right?
Always the print version will have sharper corners than the hand writing version.
אָח- 'ah'- is Brother in Hebrew.
אָח
The pronunciation is important; try to pronounce it more glottaly- from your throat.
חָוָוה- 'hava'- is a farm.
חָוָוה
Here, the handwriting and the print versions are almost the same; Let’s write them:
חָוָוה
in Print-
חָוָוה
Now it's time for Yana's insight.
When writing Hebrew alef-beit always start from the top- both in the hand and the print writings.
In this lesson we studied two new Hebrew letters-
ז, ח
with the variation of 'ז.
Did you know that you have already mastered a third of the complete Hebrew Alef-Beit and the niqqud system?
Good job!
But how do you write good in Hebrew?
In the next lesson lesson we will learn this and two new letters plus one niqqud.
See you then!
Lehitraot!!
