Galia: Before eleven.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Sherah: Israelis are expert travelers.
Amir: Well, we travel a lot because we live in such a small country. You have to get out and stretch your legs every once in a while.
Sherah: There are three times in the year when many people in Israel like to leave the country.
Amir: Right, the first is in the spring during Passover.
Sherah: The second is during summer holidays, and the third is during the high holidays in the Fall.
Amir: Many young people also like to take a big trip after their term of service in the Army.
Sherah: The most popular travel destinations for young people include India, Thailand and South America.
Amir: Young people aren't the only ones who love to travel, though.
Sherah: Right, families also need to get out of the country!
Amir: Popular travel destinations for Israeli families are Europe and North America.
Sherah: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Sherah: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Amir: להזמין מקום
Sherah: meaning "to reserve a place".
Sherah: This phrase is made of two words. The first word is the verb להזמין meaning “to order”.
Amir: The second word is מקום which means “place”.
Sherah: This phrase can be used when reserving a place for dinner.
Amir: If you call a restaurant to make a reservation, you would say, אני רוצה להזמין מקום.
Sherah: If you’re a woman, you would say אני רוצה להזמין מקום.
Amir: You can use this phrase to reserve a room in a hotel like in the dialogue, or you can use it to reserve a seat at a concert.
Sherah: Can you give us an example using this phrase?
Amir: Sure. For example, you can say.. לילך מזמינה מקום בקונצרט של גידי גוב.
Sherah: ...which means "Lilach is reserving a place at Gidi Gov’s concert."
Sherah: Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Sherah: In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask when check-out is.
Amir: And the focus of this lesson is using regular pa’al verbs.
Sherah: In the dialogue, the verb לעזוב was used in two different ways.
Amir: לעזוב means “to leave”.
Sherah: The first time we see it, the front desk attendant says ואתה עוזב ביום ראשון, נכון
Amir: Here לעזוב is conjugated in the present tense and it agrees with אתה in the masculine singular.
Sherah: Let’s go through all four conjugations of לעזוב in the present tense.
Amir: Sure, first is the masculine singular, like in the dialogue: עוזב
Sherah: Second is the feminine singular
Amir: which is pronounced עוזבת
Sherah: then there’s the masculine plural
Amir: which is עוזבים
Sherah: And last is the feminine plural:
Amir: which is עוזבות
Sherah: The second way we see this verb used in the dialogue is in the masculine plural form, עוזבים.
Amir: We hear this when Doron says מתי עוזבים ביום ראשון.
Sherah: Right, he says, “When does one leave on Sunday?”
Amir: By this he means, “when is check-out?”.
Sherah: The way he phrases it is typical in Hebrew. He says מתי עוזבים or literally “when does one leave”.
Amir: Using a verb in the masculine plural without a subject is the way you make a general statement in Hebrew.
Sherah: That’s why Doron says מתי or “when” and then עוזבים meaning “leave”. It’s implied that he’s talking about people in general. So it’s like “When do people leave?”.
Amir: At the end, he adds ביום ראשון
Sherah: “When do people leave on Sunday?”
Amir: Another example of this would be עובדים ביום ראשון בישראל
Sherah: "People work on Sundays in Israel."
Amir: Or מדברים גרמנית בגרמניה
Sherah: Meaning “People speak German in Germany.” And can you give us another example of a normal sentence with לעזוב
Amir: Sure, how about דינה עוזבת את הבית
Sherah: Which means “Dina is leaving the house.”

Outro

Sherah: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Amir: תודה
