Survival Phrases lesson 40 - Post Office 2
Today, we're going to work on getting your package one step closer to its intended destination. In the previous lesson, we discussed the phrase "I would like to send a package to Italy," which was for a man. Ani rotze lishloach chavila leitalia. Let’s break it down by syllable, Ani rotze lishloach chavila leitalia.
And for a woman, Ani rotza lishloach chavila leitalia. Let’s break it down by syllable, Ani rotza lishloach chavila leitalia.
Again, the location is interchangeable.
When sending a package though, you will probably have to explain what's in the package. They may even ask you, "What's in the package?" In Hebrew, this is Ma yesh bachavila? Let’s break it down by syllable, Ma yesh bachavila? Now, let’s hear it once again, Ma yesh bachavila? The first word Ma means, "what." Let’s break down this word and hear it one more time, Ma. Next, we have the word Yesh, which in English is "have." Finally, we have Bachavila, which is the Hebrew word for "in the package." To recap here, we have Ma yesh bachavila? Literally, this means, "What is there in the package." All together, we have Ma yesh bachavila? If you want to be sure to name all the things you are sending correctly, English is perfectly accepted.
Another way in which they can ask you, "What does the package contain?" is Ma hachavila mechila? Let’s break it down by syllable, Ma hachavila mechila? The first word Ma means, "what," and then you have Hachavila "the package." Finally, you have Mechila, which in English is "contain." All together, we have Ma hachavila mechila? This literally means, "What does the package contain?"
Please remember that even in Israel as in many other countries, there are some rules for things you can or cannot send. You can learn about these issues visiting the Israeli post website at www.israelpost.co.il
Ok, to close out today's lessons, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I’ll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you’re responsible for shouting it out loud. You’ll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so Behatzlacha! which means “Good luck!” in Hebrew.
“What's in the package?” - Ma yesh bachavila?
“What does the package contain?” - Ma hachavila mechila?
Jessi: Alright! That's going to do it for today. Remember to stop by HebrewPod101.com and pick up the accompanying PDF. If you stop by, be sure to leave us a comment!

Hi Shelley Lynn,

Thank you for posting.

zeh Mecheel is correct for ”this contains”, However, when you speak of the package you should speak of it as "she". ”zot mecheelah” will be awkward when it is said at the beginning of a sentence, but as you suggested, "Hahavilah hazot mecheelah ..." is perfect.

Keep up the good work!

Thank you, Yaara, Is zeh Mhcheel incorrect for " this contains" or is it just not common usage. Should it be in the feminine because packedge is feminine," zot mcheelah" If I said this packedge contains, would it then be correct? Hahavilah hazot m'cheelah? you corrected it as"it contains"

Hello Lenny and Pedro. I really like your responses below. I looked them up in the dictionary. I will write them down and use them.

A comment-I find it very misleading to use the English word" to" before a verb that is not in the infinitive form and this seems to be the case in all your lessons and notes. ie. to send in the vocabulary is in the infinitive form, but contain, contains is in the 1st and/or 3rd person singular( Feminine-I believe) and should not have the word "to" in front of it which indicates an infinitive. Contain, contains works well, however.

Shalom Pedro,

Thank you for your comment.

Lol! this is sweet but I"m sorry to say that in Hebrew you can not say that...

You could say:

תודה על התגובה שלך

תודה על ההערה שלך

Or:

תודה על התמיכה שלך

Happy Hebrew learning,

Lenny
