Survival Phrases Lesson 36 - How Do You Read This?
In the previous lessons, we introduced you to some phrases you can use when in Israel and this is the last lesson of the series that is dedicated to learning from people around you. Today, we are going to cover "How do you read this?"
In Hebrew, "How do you read this?" is ?אֵיךְ קוֹרְאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh kor'im et ze? Let's break it down by syllable,?אֵיךְ קוֹרְאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh kor'im et ze? Now, let's hear it once again,?אֵיךְ קוֹרְאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh kor'im et ze? The first word אֵיךְ, Eikh means "how." Let's break this word down and hear it one more time, אֵיךְ, Eikh. Next, we have קוֹרְאִים, Kor'im, which in English literally means "it's read," and here we translate it as "Do you read." Then, we have the words אֶת זֶה, Et ze, which in English is "this." Let's break it down by syllable and hear it one more time, אֶת זֶה, Et ze. And, all together, we have ?אֵיךְ קוֹרְאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh kor'im et ze? Literally, this means "How is this read?"
If you are pointing at something, probably on a book, a newspaper, or simply a street sign, you might also like to ask, "How do you pronounce this?" ?אֵיך מֵבַטֲאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh mevat'im et ze? אֵיךְ, Eikh is the Hebrew word for "how," and מֵבַטֲאִים, Mevatim is the passive third person singular form meaning "pronounced." The words אֶת זֶה, Et ze, as we already know, mean "this." Let's break it down by syllable, ?אֵיך מֵבַטֲאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh mevat'im et ze? Now, let's hear it once again, ?אֵיך מֵבַטֲאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh mevat'im et ze?
After you have learned the reading and the pronunciation, you will probably want to know about the meaning. So why don't you try to ask, ?מָה זֶה אוֹמֵר, Ma ze omer? "What does it mean?" Let's break it down by syllable, ?מָה זֶה אוֹמֵר, Ma ze omer? Listen to it once again, ?מָה זֶה אוֹמֵר, Ma ze omer?
The first word מָה, Ma means "what." Let's hear it one more time, מָה, Ma. Next, we have זֶה, Ze, which is the English pronoun "it." Last, we have אוֹמֵר, Omer, which in English means "means." So, all together, we have ?מָה זֶה אוֹמֵר, Ma ze omer? Literally, this means "What does it mean?"
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !בְּהַצְלָחָה, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew.
"How do you read this?" - ?אֵיךְ קוֹרְאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh kor'im et ze?
"What does it mean?" - ?אֵיך מֵבַטֲאִים אֶת זֶה, Eikh mevat'im et ze?
