Lesson Transcript

Hi, everybody! In this lesson, you'll learn some important phrases for Hanukkah in Israel and some valuable cultural tips.
In Hebrew, Hanukkah is called...
חנוכה
[slowly] חנוכה
However, Jewish people don't observe Western Christmas at all.
Instead, Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, is celebrated over eight days in November and December each year. Hanukkah commemorates the rededication of the second Jewish Temple in Jerusalem.
On חנוכה, or "Hanukkah," Hebrew people greet each other by saying חנוכה שמח!
(slow) חנוכה שמח!
It means "Happy Hanukkah!"
When you meet someone on Hanukkah, be sure to greet them with this phrase.
Jewish people celebrate the holiday with special events and customs. The most popular food to eat during Hanukkah is...
לְבִיבָה
(slow) לְבִיבָה
It means "potato cake."
For Hanukkah, fried potato cakes are a traditional dish.
These deliciously crispy cakes are served with sour cream and applesauce. Contemporary recipes feature alternative ingredients, such as pumpkin, cauliflower, and a special Moroccan spice blend.
Let's wrap up this lesson by recapping what you've learned. Listen to the words and repeat after me.

Well done! [pause] Here's a fun fact! Do you know a special custom Jewish people observe over Hanukkah?
Hanukkah is observed from December 24 till the first day of the new year. Over these eight days, a candle is lit each day on a special candle holder, called the 'חנוכייה'.
You just learned about how Hebrew people celebrate Hanukkah and some important facts about the holiday.
