INTRODUCTION
John: More Slang Expressions for a Negative State of Being
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HebrewPod101.com. I'm John.
Katja: And I'm Katja!
John: This is Must-Know Hebrew Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 21. In this lesson, you'll learn more slang expressions for a negative state of being.
John: These expressions are used to express a state of being. They all carry a slightly negative meaning to them.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Katja: לישון בעמידה (lishon be'amida)
Katja: להיות בסטלה (lihiyot besatla)
Katja: להיות פחות בקטע של... (lihiyot pakhot be'keta shel...)
Katja: להיות כבד (lihiyot kaved)
John: Katja, what's our first expression?
Katja: לישון בעמידה (lishon be'amida)
John: literally meaning "to sleep standing." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to be slow, unfocused, or useless."
Katja: [SLOW] לישון בעמידה [NORMAL] לישון בעמידה
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: לישון בעמידה
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to say that someone is being slow, useless, or unfocused and, as their mind wanders, other things happen around them.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] אתה ישן בעמידה, המתחרים שלך כבר שני צעדים קדימה. [SLOW] אתה ישן בעמידה, המתחרים שלך כבר שני צעדים קדימה.
John: "You're not focused, your competitors are already two steps ahead."
Katja: [NORMAL] אתה ישן בעמידה, המתחרים שלך כבר שני צעדים קדימה.
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Katja: להיות בסטלה (lihiyot besatla)
John: literally meaning "being high." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "be stoned, or be drunk."
Katja: [SLOW] להיות בסטלה [NORMAL] להיות בסטלה
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: להיות בסטלה
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to describe the condition of obscure senses as a result of excessive drinking or drug use.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] אני בכזה סטלה, אתה יכול בבקשה להזמין לי מונית? [SLOW] אני בכזה סטלה, אתה יכול בבקשה להזמין לי מונית?
John: "I'm so drunk or stoned, can you please call a taxi for me?"
Katja: [NORMAL] אני בכזה סטלה, אתה יכול בבקשה להזמין לי מונית?
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Katja: להיות פחות בקטע של... (lihiyot pakhot be'keta shel...)
John: literally meaning "to be less in the thing of..." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "not to be into..."
Katja: [SLOW] להיות פחות בקטע של... [NORMAL] להיות פחות בקטע של...
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: להיות פחות בקטע של...
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to be more gentle or less direct; instead of saying that you are NOT into something, you can say that you're "less" into something. The meaning, however, is that you are not at all into it.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] אני פחות בקטע של מוסיקת האוס, יותר טראנס. [SLOW] אני פחות בקטע של מוסיקת האוס, יותר טראנס.
John: "I'm not really into house music, I'm more into trance."
Katja: [NORMAL] אני פחות בקטע של מוסיקת האוס, יותר טראנס.
John: Okay, what's the last expression?
Katja: להיות כבד (lihiyot kaved)
John: literally meaning "to be heavy." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "lighten up."
Katja: [SLOW] להיות כבד [NORMAL] להיות כבד
John: Listeners, please repeat.
Katja: להיות כבד
[pause - 5 sec.]
John: Use this slang expression when you want to describe someone as too serious.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] אל תהיה כבד, בוא איתנו. [SLOW] אל תהיה כבד, בוא איתנו.
John: "Lighten up, come with us!"
Katja: [NORMAL] אל תהיה כבד, בוא איתנו.
