John: New Slang Expressions That Are Getting Popular
John: Hi everyone, and welcome back to HebrewPod101.com. I'm John.

John: This is Must-Know Hebrew Slang Words and Phrases, Season 1, Lesson 20. In this lesson, you'll learn new slang expressions that are getting popular.
John: These recent slang expressions are so new that older people will likely not be familiar with them at all.
SLANG EXPRESSIONS
John: The expressions you will be learning in this lesson are:
Katja: תנחת, תנחת (tinkhat, tinkhat)
Katja: לישון על האף (lishon al ha'af)
Katja: להתאבד על משהו (lehitabed al mashehu)
Katja: חצי כח (khetsi koakh)
John: Katja, what's our first expression?
Katja: תנחת, תנחת (tinkhat, tinkhat)
John: literally meaning "descend, descend." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "land, land (back to reality), or come on, be realistic!"
Katja: [SLOW] תנחת, תנחת [NORMAL] תנחת, תנחת
John: Listeners, please repeat.

John: Use this slang expression when someone is being paranoid, overreacting, or isn't being realistic and you want to draw their attention to it. It's more or less like saying "Come on, be realistic! Land back in reality."
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] תנחת, תנחת, הסיפור שלך לא מציאותי. [SLOW] תנחת, תנחת, הסיפור שלך לא מציאותי.
John: "Come on, be realistic. You're story doesn't make sense."
Katja: [NORMAL] תנחת, תנחת, הסיפור שלך לא מציאותי.
John: Okay, what's the next expression?
Katja: לישון על האף (lishon al ha'af)
John: literally meaning "to sleep on your nose." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "stop talking nonsense."
Katja: [SLOW] לישון על האף [NORMAL] לישון על האף

John: Use this slang expression when someone is saying nonsense and you want to say something like "shut up." This a very new slag, it's popular amoung youngsters and some people might not be familiar with it.
John: Now let's hear an example sentence.
Katja: [NORMAL] כמה שטויות אתה מדבר, לך תשן על האף. [SLOW] כמה שטויות אתה מדבר, לך תשן על האף.
John: "What a load of nonsense! Stop saying all this nonsense."
Katja: [NORMAL] כמה שטויות אתה מדבר, לך תשן על האף.
John: Okay, what's our next expression?
Katja: להתאבד על משהו (lehitabed al mashehu)
John: literally meaning "to commit suicide on something." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "to put one's best efforts into something."
Katja: [SLOW] להתאבד על משהו [NORMAL] להתאבד על משהו

John: Use this slang expression when you want to express the idea of doing the best, or putting all energies and efforts in order to achieve a certain goal.

John: "These guys worked their socks off on this project, around the clock... "

Katja: חצי כח (khetsi koakh)
John: literally meaning "half strength or half power." But when it's used as a slang expression, it means "not great."

John: Use this slang expression when you want to say that something was (or is) not that great.
