Doron: Hello, Iโ€™m looking for a good restaurant in the area.
Concierge: There are good restaurants along the promenade.
Doron: How do I get to the promenade?
Concierge: You walk out the door and turn to the left. There's a bus stop there.
Doron: Which bus travels to the promenade?
Concierge: Bus number 16 reaches the intersection near the promenade.
Doron: Okay.
Concierge: From the intersection youโ€™re going to walk 200 meters toward the sea.
Doron: Thank you very much.
Concierge: You're welcome.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Sherah: There are several nice boardwalks in Israel. The most popular one is in Tel Aviv on the beach.
Amir: The boardwalk, or ื˜ื™ื™ืœืช, runs along the beach from the old port all the way down to Jaffa.
Sherah: There are swimming beaches, restaurants and hotels all the way up and down the boardwalk.
Amir: Itโ€™s also a great place to walk, run or ride bikes.
Sherah: There is another popular boardwalk is in Jerusalem.
Amir: This boardwalk is an urban boardwalk and itโ€™s bordered on both sides by fast food restaurants and shops.
Sherah: There are places to sit and relax all along the boardwalk.
Amir: Another nice boardwalk is the one in Eilat.
Sherah: This one borders the Red Sea.
Amir: Youโ€™ll find restaurants and shops along this boardwalk.
Sherah: What makes it a little different is that itโ€™s lined with all sorts of stands with artists and craft vendors.
Amir: Itโ€™s definitely a nice place to find local craftsmen.
Sherah: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Sherah: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first phrase is..
Amir: ืžื—ืคืฉ ืžืกืขื“ื”
Sherah: meaning "to look for a restaurant".
Sherah: The first word of this phrase is ืœื—ืคืฉ which is a verb meaning โ€œto look forโ€ or โ€œto search forโ€.
Amir: This verb doesn't need a preposition following it like it does in English.
Sherah: The second word is ืžืกืขื“ื” meaning โ€œrestaurantโ€.
Amir: When you want to talk about searching for something in general, you only need to use the verb and the object.
Sherah: Yes, like in the dialogue, when Doron says ืื ื™ ืžื—ืคืฉ ืžืกืขื“ื”.
Amir: If you want to talk about something specific, you need to use the preposition ืืช in between the verb and the direct object.
Sherah: Yes, as you do with all direct objects without other prepositions in Hebrew. Can you give us an example using this word?
Amir: Sure. For example, you can say.. ืื ื™ ืžื—ืคืฉ ืืช ื”ืขื™ืคืจื•ืŸ
Sherah: ...which means "I am looking for the pencil"
Amir: The next phrase weโ€™ll talk about is ืœืคื ื•ืช ืฉืžืืœื”.
Sherah: This means, โ€œto turn leftโ€.
Amir: In the dialogue, the concierge explains to Doron what he should do to get to the restaurant. She tells him to go out the door and turn left or ืคื•ื ื” ืฉืžืืœื”.
Sherah: As a full sentence, this would be ืืชื” ืคื•ื ื” ืฉืžืืœื” but ืืชื” was in the beginning of the sentence and didn't need to be repeated.
Amir: If the concierge were telling this to a woman, she would say ืืช ืคื•ื ื” ืฉืžืืœื”.
Sherah: And if she were to tell Doron to turn right, she would say ืืชื” ืคื•ื ื” ื™ืžื™ื ื”.
Amir: Or for a woman, ืืช ืคื•ื ื” ื™ืžื™ื ื”.
Sherah: So, letโ€™s have an example of this phrase in a sentence.
Amir: ื‘ื›ื™ื›ืจ ืืชื” ืคื•ื ื” ื™ืžื™ื ื”
Sherah: Thatโ€™s โ€œAt the traffic circle, you turn right.โ€
Sherah: Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Amir: In this lesson, you will learn how to ask for directions. The focus of this lesson is the verb ืœื”ื’ื™ืข and hifโ€™il verbs in general.
Sherah: The last group of active verbs we have yet to take a look at in this series is hifโ€™il verbs.
Amir: This is the least used group of active verbs.
Sherah: The verb ืœื”ื’ื™ืข from the dialogue is part of this verb group.
Amir: Doron uses this verb to ask how to get to the boardwalk when he says ืื™ืš ืื ื™ ืžื’ื™ืข ืœื˜ื™ื™ืœืช.
Sherah: Letโ€™s run through the four forms of ืœื”ื’ื™ืข in the present tense.
Amir: Weโ€™ll start with the masculine singular form ืžื’ื™ืข
Sherah: And the feminine singular:
Amir: ืžื’ื™ืขื”
Sherah: The Masculine plural:
Amir: ืžื’ื™ืขื™ื
Sherah: And the Feminine plural:
Amir: ืžื’ื™ืขื•ืช
Sherah: As with all verbs in the present tense from the other verb groups, with the exception of the feminine singular, these verbs have the same endings.
Amir: Right, and the feminine singular ends in ื”- in this verb group.
Sherah: Hifโ€™il verbs begin with -ืž and have an โ€œeeโ€ sound between the second and last root letters.
Amir: The sentence Doron uses is a very good one to know in Hebrew when you want to ask how to get somewhere.
Sherah: Yes, you can use it for many different situations.
Amir: For instance, you could say ืื™ืš ืื ื™ ืžื’ื™ืข ืœืžื›ื•ืœืช?
Sherah: Or โ€œHow do I get to the grocery store?โ€
Amir: Or you could say, โ€œืื™ืš ืื ื™ ืžื’ื™ืข ืœื‘ื™ืช ืฉืœ ืกื‘ืชื?โ€
Sherah: โ€œHow do I get to Grandmaโ€™s house?โ€
Amir: If you are a woman, you would use the feminine form or ืžื’ื™ืขื”.
Sherah: So, for the last example, I would say ืื™ืš ืื ื™ ืžื’ื™ืขื” ืœื‘ื™ืช ืฉืœ ืกื‘ืชื?
Amir: Later in the dialogue, the concierge used ืœื”ื’ื™ืข when he says ืงื• 16 ืžื’ื™ืข ืœื˜ื™ื™ืœืช.
Sherah: Right, he says this when he says that the line 16 bus reaches the intersection near the promenade.
Amir: In this sentence, he uses the masculine singular form of the verb because it agrees with ืงื• or โ€œlineโ€.
Sherah: Letโ€™s hear some sample sentences using the verb ืœื”ื’ื™ืข.
Amir: The first sentence is: ื“ื•ืจื•ืŸ ืžื’ื™ืข ืœื˜ื™ื™ืœืช
Sherah: That is, โ€œDoron is arriving at the boardwalkโ€.
Amir: Next is: ืื™ืš ืžื’ื™ืขื™ื ืœืจื›ื‘ืช?
Sherah: โ€œHow does one get to the train?โ€
Amir: The last example is ื”ืจื›ื‘ืช ืžื’ื™ืขื” ืœืชื—ื ืช ื”ืจื›ื‘ืช
Sherah: Which means โ€œThe train is arriving at the train station.โ€

Outro

Sherah: Okay, thatโ€™s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and weโ€™ll see you next time! Bye!
Amir: ืชื•ื“ื”
