Shira: Hello everyone. Welcome back to HebrewPod101.com. This is the last All About Lesson Number 15 – Top Five Pet Phrases. I’m Shira.
Amir: [ואני אמיר]
Shira: After years of living in Israel, Amir, I have some pet phrases to share.
Amir: Go ahead.
Shira: After a while, you will have you own favorite phrases too. But for now, we’ll give you some of ours.
Amir: These are all phrases that Israelis use a lot.
Shira: They’re kind of like the “cool” and “awesome” of English. You’ll fit in right away when you use them.
--
Shira: Now, our favorite phrases, Amir.
Amir: Ok, here we go. [אפשר לבקש ממך משהו]
Shira: Can I request something from you?
Amir: [אין בעיה]
Shira: No problem.
Amir: [איפה השירותים]
Shira: Where’s the toilet?
Amir: [בוא נלך]
Shira: Let’s go.
Amir: [באמת]
Shira: “Really?” Let’s hear these phrases one more time, slowly.
Amir: [?אפשר לבקש ממך משהו]
Shira: Can I request something from you?
Amir: [אין בעיה]
Shira: No problem.
Amir: [?איפה השירותים]
Shira: Where’s the toilet?
Amir: [בוא נלך]
Shira: Let’s go.
Amir: [באמת?]
Shira: “Really?”
--
Shira: Let’s take a close look at how to use these Hebrew expressions.
Amir: Pet phrase number one is [?אפשר לבקש ממך משהו].
Shira: Basically this is the polite way of getting someone’s attention by asking the person “Can I request something from you?”
Amir: Exactly. [?אפשר לבקש ממך משהו]
Shira: It’s also generally used when you want to ask someone a favor.
Amir: So for example, I might ask you for directions and start off by saying [אפשר לבקש ממך משהו].
Shira: Can I request something from you? Where’s the post office?
Amir: Good work, Shira.
Shira: Thank you. That was very useful.
Amir: Pet phrase number two is [אין בעיה].
Shira: This is a great phrase. Basically it’s the Hebrew equivalent of “forget about it” or “no problem”.
B; So for example, if someone steps on your foot you can say [אין בעיה].
Shira: Or if something weird happens, just throw out a [אין בעיה].
Amir: We love this expression and we use it all the time.
Shira: Yes we do.
Amir: Pet phrase number three is [איפה השירותים?].
Shira: Now here’s the ultimate life saver.
Amir: Yes. Not knowing how to ask for directions to the toilet can be a matter of life and death.
Shira: Indeed, so this, as you might have guessed, means “Where’s the toilet?”
Amir: This is a very useful phrase.
Shira: Yeah, it saved me in so many situations. And absolute must know phrase.
Amir: Ok, so on to number four. Pet phrase four is [בוא נלך].
Shira: Ok, this is a great phrase for when you want to leave some place but you don’t want to go alone.
Amir: It means “Let’s go” but it literally means “Come, we go”.
Shira: So first of all, let’s get this down.
Amir: [בוא נלך]
Shira: How about an example of how we can use this in a sentence.
Amir: [בוא נלך לחוף הים]
Shira: This means “Let’s go to the beach.”
Amir: How about [בואי נלך הביתה עכשיו].
Shira: No, no, not yet. Nice try though.
Amir: We can’t go home yet. We still have one more phrase to tell them.
Amir: So pet phrase number five is [באמת?].
Shira: [באמת]. It means “Really?”
Amir: [באמת?]
Shira: This phrase can be used when you want to express surprise, doubt or something else along those lines, just like we would use “Really?” or “Really?” in English.
Amir: Yes, it’s a great interjection.
Shira: Well, those were our favorite phrases in Hebrew.
Amir: We hope you like them too.
Shira: We’re sure you’ll find lots of uses for them.
--
Shira: So that’s it for this lesson. Thanks for listening!

Hello, on your first sentence,"may I request something from you", you use the word memecha. Does this change if you are speaking to a woman? from memechah to memech? and yes, these are important and useful phrases.
