Introduction
Eric: Welcome to 3-Minute Hebrew Season 1, Lesson 4 - Asking How Someone Is. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to ask and answer the question ‘How are you?’ in Hebrew.
Body
Eric: First we’ll learn how to say 'How are you?' in Hebrew.
Yaara: [Normal] מה שלומך?(ma shlom'kha?)
Eric: First is an interrogative meaning 'what'
Yaara: [Normal] מה [Slow] מה (ma)
Eric: Last is the noun meaning 'your well-being'
Yaara: [Normal] שלומך [Slow] שלומך(shlom'kha)
Eric: Listen again to the phrase meaning 'How are you?'
Yaara: [Slow] מה שלומך? [Normal] מה שלומך?
Eric: Ok, now let's see the informal way to say 'What's up?'
Yaara: [Normal] מה העניינים?(ma ha'inyanim?)
Eric: First is an interrogative meaning 'what'
Yaara: [Normal] מה [Slow] מה (ma)
Eric: Last is the noun meaning 'the things’ or ‘the matters'
Yaara: [Normal] העניינים [Slow] העניינים(ha’inyanim)
Eric: Listen again to the informal phrase meaning 'What's up?'
Yaara: [Slow] מה העניינים? [Normal] מה העניינים?
Eric: Next we have the way to say 'fine, Thank you.'
Yaara: [Normal] טוב, תודה.(tov, toda.)
Eric: First is an adjective meaning 'good'
Yaara: [Normal] טוב [Slow] טוב(tov)
Eric: Last is the noun meaning 'thank (you)'
Yaara: [Normal] תודה [Slow] תודה(toda)
Eric: Listen again to the phrase meaning 'fine, Thank you.'
Yaara: [Slow] טוב, תודה. [Normal] טוב, תודה.
Eric: Finally, we have the way to say 'Not so well.'
Yaara: [Normal] לא כל-כך טוב.(lo kol kakh tov.)
Eric: First is an adverb meaning 'no'
Yaara: [Normal] לא [Slow] לא(lo)
Eric: Next is the phrase meaning 'so, so much'
Yaara: [Normal] כל-כך [Slow] כל-כך(kol kakh)
Eric: Last is the adjective meaning 'good'
Yaara: [Normal] טוב [Slow] טוב(tov)
Eric: Listen again to the phrase meaning 'Not so well.'
Yaara: [Slow] לא כל-כך טוב. [Normal] לא כל-כך טוב.
Cultural Insight
Eric: Now it's time for a quick cultural insight.
Yaara: Israelis are very sociable and open, and given the chance, they enjoy talking about most things. You shouldn’t be surprised if when you ask someone the question "how are you", you hear about a person’s life, children, and perhaps even cats!

Yes, "י" stands for Y or I sounds, and functions as a vowel "ee" (as in "Bee") as well.

In this word עניינים, the yud (י) makes the NYA sound and we double it to make sure the word is being pronounced correctly and not "ANINIM" - remember the voweling isn't in use for fluent speakers.

העניינים inyanim - does yod stand for both y and i? Also, why are there 2 yods in a row for inyanim?
