Lesson Transcript

Hi, everyone! Welcome to Hebrew Weekly Words. My name is Yaara and today we’re going to talk about Hebrew Life Events. So this is going to be quite complicated, but also very interesting. It’s going to be a lot of verbs. You know it’s rough but bear with me. Let’s start!
1.
להוולד
(lehivaled) “to be born”
The way we will define it in the dictionary is it’s a third person, masculine, singular form of the verb which is
נולד
(nolad).
הוא נולד בינואר.
(hu nolad be'yanuar.)
“He was born in January.”
2.
סיום
(siyum) “graduation”
So
סיום
(siyum) actually means ending, but we don’t have a word for graduation so we use
סיום
(siyum) and we can add something to it to make a special kind of ending like
סיום לימודים
(siyum limudim) would be “graduation” or literally “studying ending” or “ending of studying”, “ending of school”.
מחר טקס סיום הלימודים שלי.
(makhar tekes siyum ha'limudim sheli.)
“Tomorrow is my graduation ceremony.”
3.
להתחתן
(lehitkhaten) “to marry” / “to get married”
אני לא רוצה להתחתן.
(ani lo rotsa lehitkhaten.)
“I don't want to get married.”
4.
[לפרוש]
(lifrosh) “to retire”
[לפרוש]
(lifrosh) is “to retire”, but when you want to say to retire in an old age, to retire to stop working, we usually say
לצאת לפנסיה
(latset le'pensya) literally “to go out on a pension” and that means to stop working and live off your pension money. Yeah.
5.
למות
(lamut) “to die”
Well, you know, everyone dies eventually. The infinitive form is
למות
(lamut) and the way we would find it in the dictionary is in the singular, masculine, past tense, third person form of the word which is
נפגש
(met).
הוא מת בשנה שעברה.
(hu met ba'shana she'avra.)
“He died last year.”
Okay, so that was a rather dark ending, but if there’s anything important you think we missed. Please write it in the comments below and don’t forget to check out the site. See you next week! Don’t die
