Lesson Transcript

Hi, viewers! Welcome to Hebrew Weekly Words. My name is Yaara and this week’s theme is Jobs.
1.
מקצועות
(miktso-ot) “Jobs”
מקצועות
(miktso-ot) is the plural form. The singular form is
מקצוע
(miktso-ah) which is more of a profession than a job.
2.
אחות
(akhot) “Nurse”
This is a fun one because
אחות
(akhot) literally means “sister” and it’s the same word for nurse and sister so it can get confusing and there’s no real way to tell them apart. You base it on the context. So here’s a fun sentence
אחותי היא אחות.
(akhoti hi akhot.) “My sister is a nurse.”
Which is literally like saying “My sister is a sister.”
3.
חקלאי
(khaklay) “farmer”
חקלאי
(Khaklay) means “farmer” and it comes from the word
[חקלאות]
(chakla’ut) meaning “agriculture”
סבא שלי הוא חקלאי.
(saba sheli hu khaklay.) “My grandfather is a farmer.”
So yeah
[חקלאות]
(chakla’ut) is “agriculture” and it’s also in Hebrew used as farming
[חקלאות]
(chakla’ut)
4.
מהנדס
(mehandes) “engineer”
The feminine form is
[מהנדסת]
(mehandeset)
“Engineers make a lot of money”
מהנדסים מרויחים הרבה כסף.
(mehandesim marvikhim harbe kesef.)
I think. I’m not an engineer.
5.
מתכנת
(metakhnet) “programmer”
מתכנת
(metakhnet) is the masculine form.
The feminine form is
[מתכנתת]
(metachnetet)
היא לומדת להיות מתכנתת.
(hi lomedet lihiyot metakhnetet.) “She is studying to be a programmer.”
6.
עובד משרד
(oved misrad)“office worker”
It literally means “office worker”. It’s not used very often in Hebrew because I think people like having their own job title other than just “office worker” but you can say that.
יש לנו חמישה עובדי משרד.
(yesh lanu khamisha ovdei misrad.) “We have five office workers.”
So thank you so much for watching. What do you do for a living? Tell us in the comments below and don’t forget to check out the site. See you next week. Bye!
