הדס: כן, הנה הבגרות שלי. מה עוד אתה צריך?

Clerk: Welcome. Do you have some paperwork for me?
Hadas: Yes, here are my matriculation papers. What more do you need?
Clerk: I need confirmation that you paid.
Hadas: Here it is. Where’s the music building?
Clerk: It’s the third building on the right.
Hadas: Thank you.
POST CONVERSATION BANTER
Sherah: Getting a higher education is very important in Israel.
Amir: Most people consider a first rate degree to be essential in finding a job.
Sherah: There are eight different universities in Israel to choose from.
Amir: And many colleges as well.
Sherah: The first three Israeli universities were actually created before the modern State of Israel came to be, during the British Mandate.
Amir: The first University was the Technion, the University I attended.
Sherah: What a coincidence! I believe it was created in 1912, right?
Amir: That’s right - it was pivotal in determining the direction universities would take in terms of the instructional language.
Sherah: Yes, there was a discussion about what language they would use, and it it was between Hebrew and German.
Amir: In the end, they chose Hebrew and that helped encourage the use of Hebrew in general in Israel, and in universities in the future.
Sherah: The second University was Hebrew University in Jerusalem and that was founded in 1925.
Amir: It was followed by the Weizmann Institute in 1934.
Sherah: After the State of Israel was established, five more universities were founded.
Amir: This includes the largest of all the universities, Tel Aviv University.
Sherah: Okay, now onto the vocab.

KEY VOCAB AND PHRASES
Sherah: Let's have a closer look at the usage of some of the words and phrases from this lesson. The first word is..
Amir: ההוא
Sherah: meaning "that"
Sherah: When Hadas asked where the administration building was, the man she asked responded with בבניין ההוא.
Amir: You use this phrase when you’re referring to a specific object.
Sherah: When the object is a feminine noun, you would use ההיא.
Amir: The phrase is made of two parts, the definite article -ה and the pronoun הוא or היא.
Sherah: The two together mean “that”.
Amir: Or “that one”.
Sherah: Can you give us an example using this word?
Amir: Sure. For example, you could say.. הוא אוכל במסעדה ההיא
Sherah: ...which means "He’s eating at that restaurant." Okay, now onto the grammar.

Lesson focus

Sherah: In this lesson, you will learn to register as a new student at a University using the verb צריך.
Amir: In Hebrew, like in other languages, you use certain modal verbs to modify the meaning of a second verb. They can also be used to express some sort of obligation.
Sherah: The verb צריך is used in both ways in our dialogue.
Amir: The first time we see צריך, it’s combined with the verb ללכת in the infinitive.
Sherah: Hadas says אני צריכה ללכת לשם meaning “I need to go there”.
Amir: This is the feminine singular version of צריך which she uses because she is a woman.
Sherah: The second time we see this verb is when Hadas is talking with the clerk in the administration office.
Amir: There she says מה עוד אתה צריך?
Sherah: Here she uses the masculine singular form.
Amir: That’s because she is addressing a male clerk.
Sherah: So let’s go over the four forms of צריך.
Amir: First is the base form, the masculine singular form, which is צריך.
Sherah: Next is the feminine singular form.
Amir: That is צריכה
Sherah: Next is the masculine plural.
Amir: צריכים
Sherah: And last is the feminine plural.
Amir: צריכות
Sherah: This verb is somewhat irregular and follows the same pattern as adjectives.
Amir: The third time we see this verb used is when the clerk responds to Hadas by saying אני צריך אישור ששילמת.
Sherah: Here again the masculine singular form was used.
Amir: That’s because it’s the clerk speaking in first person.
Sherah: So let’s hear some more examples of this verb used in action. Can you start us off with the first one?
Amir: Sure, the first sample sentence is היא צריך מעיל חדש
Sherah: This means “he needs a new coat” and uses the masculine singular form of the verb.
Amir: הילדה צריכה כוס מיים
Sherah: Which means “The girl needs a glass of water”. Here the feminine singular version of the verb is used because it agrees with ילדה a feminine noun.
Amir: And last is הם צריכים לשון
Sherah: “They need to sleep”. This used the masculine plural form agreeing with הם.

Outro

Sherah: Okay, that’s all for this lesson. Thank you for listening, everyone, and we’ll see you next time! Bye!
Amir: תודה
