Lesson Transcript

Ahoy sailors! My name is Yaara. This is Hebrew Weekly Words and I’m really excited for this episode because our theme this week is at the aquarium. Now, I love aquariums, but not as much as a good friend of mine who’s obsessed with them so this episode is for you Shaha. Let’s start!
1.
כריש
(Karish) “shark”
בחופים בישראל אין כרישים.
(ba'chofim beIsrael ein krishim) “In the beaches of Israel there are no sharks.”
Not that I know of anyway.
2.
מדוזה
(meduza) “jellyfish”
This is horrible because during July, the beaches in Israel are full of bajillion jellyfish and you can’t even get into the water because the water stinks. You might notice that the word…
מדוזה
(meduza) is used in Greek mythology I think for a mythological creature with snakes for hair and eyes that can turn you into stone which is not as bad as getting stung by a jellyfish.
ביולי כדאי להזהר ממדוזות.
(beyuli kedai lehizaher mi'meduzot) “In July, you better watch out for jellyfish.”
Only if you’re in the water though.
3.
תמנון
(tamnun) “octopus”
You may notice that the word...
תמנון
(tamnun), it’s similar to the word…
שמונה
It has similar sounds and letters because
שמונה
means “eight” and “octopus”
תמנון
(tamnun) have eight arms so there you go.
תמנונים הם חכמים מאוד.
(tamnunim hem chachamim meod) “Octopi are very smart.”
Right,this is the plural form?
4.
סרטן
(sartan) “crab”
סרטן
(sartan) means “crab”
It also means “cancer” as in the sign and also the illness, just so you know.
סרטנים הולכים על הצד.
(sartanim holchim al hatzad) “Crabs walk sideways.”
5.
דיונון
(dionun) “squid”
דיונון
(dionun) has the word
דיו
(dio) in it which means “ink” and if you know what a squid is, you probably understand why.
כשדיונון נבהל הוא יורה דיו.
(kshe'dionun nivhal hu yore dio) “When a squid gets alarmed, he shoots ink.”
That was the end, I had so much fun talking about aquarium stuff. I hope you had fun as well. Leave me a comment below if you want to and go check out the site. See you next week. Bye!
