Yaara: Hi everyone, My name is Yaara, and this is Hebrew weekly words. Our theme for this week is vegetables.
1.
בצל
(batzal) "onion"
(ani lo bo'kha, pashut ħatakh'ti ba'tzal.)
"I'm not crying, it's just that I sliced some onions."
Why, onion? Why?
2.
גזר
(gezer) "carrot"
My sister has really orange hair, so when she was younger the kids in kindergarten called her “carrot head”,
I thought it was cute. She was super cute.
(ata ya'khol le'hosif gezer la-salat?)
"Can you add carrot to the salad?"
3.
(pitriya) "mushroom"
"I'm going to the forest to pick mushrooms."
That's not something you do in Isarel.
And there’s a saying in Hebrew, when like a lot of things appear suddenly, like this new hipster neighborhood and all of a sudden they're like million coffee shops, so you can say that all these coffee shops,
(ani yo'tzet la-ya'ar lik'tof pitriyot.)
“turned up like mushrooms after the rain”.
4.
שום
(shum) "garlic"
Garlic is my grandfather's medicine for everything. Once I had a sore throat and a friend of mine made me eat a whole fresh garlic clove, just chewed it up and swallow it supposed to be good for your throat or something. I don't know if it did, I but I know I could not concentrate in my sore throat after doing that, so maybe it did help.
(shum tari hu tov la-bri'ut.)
"Fresh garlic is good for your health."
But not for your social life.
5.
(tapuakh adama) "potato"
I like this one because I like potatoes, but also because it's a really cool term. It means literally “earth apple”.
(ani ohevet le'e'khol tapuaħ adama ba-tanur.)
"I love eating oven-baked potato."
