Survival Phrases Lesson 56 - What Time Does It Open?
In today's lesson, we'll introduce you to a phrase that you'll need on several occasions! While in Israel, there will be lots of food to try, many things to buy, and places to see. We all know you want to see the sights, and this phrase is essential to planning your days.
In Hebrew, "What time does it open?" is ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִפְתָּח, Be'eize sha'ah ze niftakh? Let's break it down by syllable, ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִפְתָּח, Be'eize sha'ah ze niftakh? Now, let's hear it once again, ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִפְתָּח, Be'eize sha'ah ze niftakh? The first word בְּאֵיזֶה, Be'eize means "in what." Let's hear it one more time, בְּאֵיזֶה, Be'eize. Then, we have שָׁעָה, Sha'ah, which in English is "hour." Let's break it down by syllable, שָׁעָה, Sha'ah. Now, let's hear it one more time, שָׁעָה, Sha'ah. To recap, we have בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה, Be'eize sha'ah. Literally, this means "in what hour." We translate it as "what time." Let's look at the next word זֶה, Ze, which is the preposition "it." Last, we have the word נִפְתָּח, Niftakh, which means "open." All together, we have ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִפְתָּח, Be'eize sha'ah ze niftakh? Literally, this means, "What hour does it open?" We translate it as "What time does it open?"
It's also very important to know when places close! The worst thing to encounter is a closed sign hanging in front of a place you wanted to see! In Hebrew, "What time does it close?" is בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִסְגָּר, Be'eize sha'ah ze nisgar? Let's break it down by syllable, ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִסְגָּר, Be'eize sha'ah ze nisgar? Now, let's hear it once again, ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִסְגָּר, Be'eize sha'ah ze nisgar? As you can see, you have the same structure as the previous phrase. בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה, Be'eize sha'ah ze translates as "what time." Then, you have נִסְגָּר, Nisgar "close" in place of נִפְתָּח, Niftakh "open." Let's break this word down and hear it one more time, ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִסְגָּר, Be'eize sha'ah ze nisgar? All together, we have ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה זֶה נִסְגָּר, Be'eize sha'ah ze nisgar? This literally means, "At what hour does it close?" We translate it as "What time does it close?"
We can use the same pattern, בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה, Be'eize sha'ah..., in many other situations.
In a hotel, when you want to ask in Hebrew, "What time is the breakfast served?" it is בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה מֻגֵֶּשֵׁת אֲרוּחַת הַבֹּקֶר, Be'eize sha'ah mugeshet arukhat haboker?
"What time does the show start?" ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה הַהוֹפָעָה מַתְחִילַָה, Be'eize sha'ah hahofa'a matkhila?
"What time does the train leave?" ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה הָרַכֶּבֶת עוֹזֶבֵת, Be'eize sha'ah harakever ozevet?
"What time do we arrive?" ?בְּאֵיזֶה שָׁעָה אֲנַחְנוּ מַגִּיעִים, Be'eize sha'ah anakhnu megi'im?
Ok, to close out today's lesson, we would like you to practice what you have just learned. I'll provide you with the English equivalent of the phrase and you're responsible for shouting it out loud. You'll have a few seconds before I give you the answer, so !בְּהַצְלָחָה, Behatzlacha! which means "Good luck!" in Hebrew.
